Reviews for CD 'Echoes of Budapest'
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Hague String Trio effortlessly reveals the music’s deeper layers. The trio’s passionate playing evokes a rich palette of colors and unites the shifting moods into one impressive whole.
The interpretation by the The Hague musicians is marked -above all - by flawless intonation and a commanding presence.
This new release from The Hague String Trio and Cobra Records is absolutely terrific! Once again, the Trio has made a wonderful selection of music. And, as always, they deliver outstanding performances, with total commitment and perfect execution.
To say I'm loving this new release is an understatement.
the Hague String Trio play these works outstandingly well, and include .... two première recordings. The booklet documentation is first class, as is the recording in Westvest90, Schiedam.

The Hague String Trio … performs this music as if it was Hungarian through and through. Intonation is impeccable, the three instruments are perfectly balanced and there’s a palpable sense of good-natured communion about the playing.
The Hague String Trio plays all the compositions with a fine and subtle accuracy, which makes Echoes of Budapest a solid album by three musicians who boldly and successfully explore the edges of the classical repertoire.

What magnificent playing by these three ladies! And the recording is just as magnificent.
The compositions by these three Hungarian composers are certainly a welcome addition to the repertoire and more than worth repeated listening.
And he concludes with: “In one word: bravo!

‘Miriam Hyde, Emmy Frensel-Wegener, Ethel Smyth and Irene Britton-Smith could not have wished for better ambassadors of their music than The Hague String Trio.’
'The Hague String Trio plays these four world premieres with great expressiveness. The performances are an exposé of fun, expression and lively empathy, performed with love and care.'
‘These performances are a gift’

'This outstanding music ….. burns bright, and The Hague String Trio brings energy and soul to this heartfelt collection.'
'(Kattenburg) performed here with dizzying verve'
'an accomplished and affecting disc performed with great skill and care.'
Gramophone
'The Hague Trio’s accounts of Klein’s Trio, Krása’s Passacaglia and Fugue and Tanec ….. are nothing if not competitive with the best of their rivals.
Their ensemble is as tight as their collective intonation is sure, and they bring a keen expressivity to these scores written under appalling conditions.'
'a thought-provoking programme, captured in first-rate sound.'
MusicWeb International
'Well documented, superbly performed and recorded, this is as good an advertisement for the string trio as you could imagine, and I would be prepared to lay a bet that a majority of listeners would think this was a string quartet on a first encounter. This CD is also a fine testament to a group of composers who all suffered under the oppressive regimes of the mid-20th century; well worth anyone’s attention, and what the Dutch would call an ‘aanwinst’ for any collection of good chamber music.'

Elegant Classics
'Cobra Records ….. is one of the most pleasant surprises of recent years with its dramaturgical approach, choice of soloists and technical sound quality. And we are delighted that their next album has come to us.'
'The three performers have an individual sound, yet they are one voice.'
'three expressive rich and perfectly prepared soloist techniques'
'(Weinberg)….. style and the honest immediacy of the recording of The Hague Trio breathes directly and, in my view, is the jewel of the disc. I don't even know how many times I played it, but it was always like listening to it for the first time.'
